We have been continuing to work with graphing, slope, and linear equations in slope intercept form y=mx+b. This week they were introduced to using transposing to find the x-intercept, y-intercept, and slope of a liner equation. They will continue practicing that the week after we return from CWW. I have added a couple of worksheets to practice and look over as a guide on the process of transposing. I would suggest that they work on those the weekend before we return to regular classes as a refresher.
This week finishes the novel being read and the students are beginning to write their essays. They have been given a graphic organizer to help them write the essay, and we have taken a bit of time in SI class to review how to write an expository essay and the structure that it follows. Each student should have their thesis statements written and can begin to write the body paragraphs if they have time. The essays will be due March 1st, which seems to be far away but that time will quickly pass. Doing planning now and using the organizer will be very helpful in have a great final product.
This week has been fully dedicated to writing a five paragraph essay on the People Power Revolution. Students were given a lot of time in class to write it this week, but it was not really enough time to get it finished only by writing in class. They will need to be writing their final draft tonight and tomorrow. The official due date is Saturday Feb. 9th by 9 pm, submitted on Google Drive. I posted an example for those students that are struggling to see how another student did it last year. This should be helpful in looking at paragraph development.
We have completed a quiz on Work, Power, and Energy this week, and next week (after CWW) will begin a lab with students finding the perfect swing rate of 2.8 seconds. They will try different variables to achieve that swing rate. They will adjust mass, angle height and chain length. They will then put results into Excel to use the graphing function and formulas to find that perfect swing rate from the variables. This should be a fun lab!
Math this week was focused on the learning of finding slope, y-intercepts, and using that information to write an equation using the standard linear form of y=mx+b. Students are expected to know how to find slope from seeing a line on a graph and by looking at a data table with multiple x and y point sets. They then take this data to find slope and use it to replace m in the equation. They then find the y-intercept by seeing where it cross the y axis or by looking at the data table and see where the x=0 and what the y value is. Mastery of these concepts will be required for this unit and throughout high school math classes. Getting a good foundation of these skills will be key.
Math and science are starting to merge over the next few weeks. In science class, students have been using formulas to find the values for Kinetic Energy and Potential Energy. Students will need to bring their calculators to class for all of next week to help with the calculating. There will be a test on the calculation of the formulas next week on Thursday or Friday depending on block. The formulas will be given, but understanding how they work will be critical. They can get extra support in understanding by visiting the science blogs and following this link to watch a video.
We are drawing closer to essay time on the novels being read. This week we covered specifics on how to write the five paragraph essay. I have added a lot of helpful materials to aide in the writing of the essay. I have a graphic organizer that structures the whole essay, a PPT on how to use Point, Evidence, and Explanations, and videos that explain the PEE process. They can all be found here on the blog. They should begin to have a working thesis based on one questions from the choice board found here, and try to write their first body paragraph.

Non-SI students should print a copy and bring to class for the extra support.
