Week of Dec. 1 – 5


This week in mathematics we did a review of transformations and took a quiz over transformations. Most students did well on the quiz and only made a few minor mistakes. We will be continuing with our geometry unit into next semester and I have attached a review sheet below that revisits the basic skills students will need along with some introductions to the concepts we will be exploring next semester. Students can follow the links in the review sheet to see videos and do practice problems on Khan Academy. Next week, teachers will be using that time to challenge students with the skills they just learned and do some problem solving that relates the concepts to real world applications.

Students have been given this week to work on their scrapbook collection of poems. The scrapbook will be due Monday or Tuesday of next week Dec. 8 or 9. I have posted the requirements for the scrapbook below. Also reading logs will be turned in next week. I have attached a blank reading log for the past two months below. We will finish next week with some fun activities dealing with poetry. When we return from break, students will begin their literature unit where they will chose a book to read and then analyze it with the theme of “power” in an expository essay.

We have been doing labs that explore the four pieces of evidence that a chemical reaction have taken place. Precipitate formation, temperature change, color change, and formation of gas. They will do a practical lab that covers lab skills and their ability to interpret data to show evidence of a chemical change next week. I have included the lab write-up document below that also has sentence starters to help students explain there evidence of a chemical change. This will be their final assessment for the semester. Once we return from break, students will do their performance task of cooking a breakfast and explaining all of the physical and chemical changes that occur. They will make pancakes, jello, and cook bacon (if allowed). In an assessment that follows the lab, they will explain all of the changes that took place. So have your child cook breakfast for you over the break and relax as they feed you as part of their homework!

Social Studies

In social studies this week, students have been busy with the Model United Nations conferences. They have proposed operative clauses on the topic on nuclear disarmament and are in the middle of debating those clauses now before a vote takes place. Next week will continue with the conferences to finish the semester. Once we return from break students will begin their unit on “power” and will be studying the Philippines People Power Revolution. At the end of the unit of study, students will write a persuasive essay on their opinion (based on evidence) that either the revolution was a success or failure.
