Week of Feb. 2 – 6

Social Studies

Students have been learning about the People Power Revolution for the past couple weeks and this week ends with an assessment on their understandings of the events and people involved in the revolution. They have completed a timeline and map of Metro Manila that includes the events, people and places important to the revolution that they can use on their next performance task. They will be making a “Fakebook” page taking on the persona of either Ferdinand Marcos, Imelda Marcos, or Benigno (Ninoy) Aquino Jr. They will have to add status updates that relate to five important events from the revolution and also create five friends of historical importance to comment on the status updates. I have posted below the complete requirements of the task below for reference. This assignment will be due  first block (Mon. or Tues.) when they return from CWW. The next part of the unit will be for students to form their own political parties along with a developed platform on issues.

Students this week in English finished planning their essays on their first novel they read and will write the essay during the week of Feb. 23-27. This will be entirely written in class as part of the “Cornerstone” assessment in writing. They will have two periods to compose, revise, and edit their work. Before that happens students have been given another novel to read and will be discussing them like the first one. They will not need to find quotes from the story in their discussion preparations as it will not be used to write an essay.

In science student finalized their work lab write-up and began to learn about potential and kinetic energy. They are learning about the different types of both energies and did a reading to help support that learning. I have posted it below to review. Later this week and once we return from CWW they will be learning how to calculate potential and kinetic energy. Many students find this challenging and I have posted below a presentation that reviews how to make the calculations. There will be a quiz on making the calculations shortly after we return from CWW.

By the end of this week in math, we will have covered all of the concepts for the Pythagorean Theorem. Once we return from CWW students will be doing a performance task using the theorem to explore real world applications. It should be a fun task and require problem solving skills. We will begin to review for the assessment over geometry after the performance task. The next unit will on functions and equations.  Students needing extra practice with word problems can use the practice sheet below.
