This week students have continued working on their memoirs and book club slides. Next week they will have book club presentations and book club choices for the next quarter. Here is the rubric for the book club presentation.
Students have continued reading the UN packet up to page 4. They are expected to have the annotate completed per page. Read and Respond this week is the last one for the quarter. Two R and R’s will be graded and students have the chance to go back to their previews entries and improve on them for grading.
Next week, they will talk about the League of Nations and World War II.
Gr. 8 have been learning about modeling. They built a heart model and a model lung. Next week, they will continue discussing the respiratory system and how it relates to the circulatory and digestive systems. Students should always visit Mr. Pasamba’s site on the weekends to prepare for the next lesson.
Gr. 8 have continued to do calculations using scientific notation. Infographic performance task was discussed and it is due on October 11, 12, or 13 depending on their block. Here is the project guide and rubric. The infographic can be on any topic, but must have the following number facts: change fractions to decimals; change recurring decimals to fractions; estimate irrational numbers; and use scientific notation appropriately. Good sites to use for the digital poster are visually, information is beautiful,canva and infogram. They can also use paper for the poster.
Next week they will work on their infographics. They will have the unit test on October 13 or 14 depending on their block. Here is a practice test.
We are very excited to have this premium Read and Write for Google program for all LS students. SI students explored this program this week and most of them found this helpful. As long as they are logged on to Chrome, they can use this program. See tutorial below.
This week, Gr. 8 continued to work on their memoir scaffold and the discussion on literary terms that they need for the book club slideshow.The deadline for memoir has been moved to October 3 or 4 depending on their block. On those days the Book Club presentation is also due and here is the rubric for the short presentation.
Next week, they will have the following: MAP testing; writing scene 3 of their memoir scaffold; book club slideshow practice; and peer editing of their entire memoir scaffold.
Gr. 8 started to learn about the United Nations. There will be a quiz on the document that I posted last week. Here is the original document again and here is the differentiated one.
Next week they will continue reading the UN document, which serves as their textbook for this unit and talk about the difference between state and nation. Read and Respond #4 is due which is the last one for the quarter. Two R and R’s will be graded – one from their choice and one from Mr. V’s choice.
This week the students enjoyed examining a mammalian heart.
Next week, they will model a heart chamber by building a working pump and learn about the Respiratory System.
Gr. 8 this week worked on scientific notation. Here are the class notes.
Next week they will finish scientific notation and the performance task, Infographic, will be introduced. They will have a Unit test before the October break.
Since this is a very short week, emphasis is on what’s going to happen next week.
The Memoir Performance task, which is due on September 29 or 30 depending on their block, was discussed. The task is: “You will be writing an original memoir that is 1-3 typed pages, or approximately 300-750 words in length, that recounts the details of an important event in your life that is thought-provoking for readers. You are expected to write a dedication with your memoir to the person who inspired you to create your original piece.” Please read the entire task here and the rubric. Here is a scaffold that the students can use to plan their memoir. A sample of a memoir from last year can be read here.
Next week, the focus will be on how WWI ended, League of Nations, WWII, and the United Nations. They will use annotate to show their understanding of the UN article. The original article is challenging, so we created a differentiated copy to be used in the Strategy Instruction class.

Gr. 8 just finished their first quiz for the quarter on Metacognitive Reading Strategies. Lessons have continued on narrative writing and students have written small moments as practice for writing their memoir.

This presentation discusses the structures of writing that are expected to be included in the memoir. Here is an example of a Memoir from last year.
Gr.8 this week began to talk about World War I. Next week, they will summarize the MAIN reasons for the war and take Cornell notes on the video below (start at 1:45 end 14:05). Last week’s quiz will be returned and re-assessment (if needed) procedures will be explained. No R and R and CEFL this week.
Science this week was about their completion of the digestive system assessment done strictly in the classroom. The next topic is the Circulatory System.
This week, exponents was discussed. Quiz on this on September 16/19 depending on their block. Here’s a practice quiz.
This week, Glass Castle was read and narrative writing was reviewed, specifically the use of introspection and dialogue. These lessons are preparing them for writing their memoir which will be due end of this month. For those who want to plan ahead, this presentation discusses the structure of writing that need to be included in their memoir.
Next week, there will be a quiz on metacognitive reading strategies (MCRS). The students have to identify the MCRS and they will be given a story in which they write and explain the MCRS that they used to understand the story. It is important for them to review the starter sentences for each of the strategies. Below is a bookmark as a guide.
Second book club will be held next Friday and the students are expected to have read the second chuck of the required pages.
Students have just finished their first quiz for this semester. Next week, they will engage in Structured Academic Controversy (SAC), where they will debate on a controversial topic. Then, they will discuss the causes of World War I.
This week, the lessons on digestive system has concluded. Next week they will have their first assessment which will be done in the classroom. They will make an analogy of the digestive system. It is important for them to fill out this chart for both the digestive system and the new system that they think of for their analogy.
