Week of December 12

English

This week was spent transforming their book club novel into a poem.   Next year, the students will write their Cornerstone essay and then they will go into the Power unit (the transformative power of words) and learn about propaganda.  They will have another opportunity to have book clubs, which will be about science fiction and dystopia.

Social Studies

This week the students have successfully finished their MUN debates.  Next year they will go straight into the Power unit and they will learn about the Philippine People Power EDSA revolution.  R and R will be coming from the Philippine Daily Inquirer instead of CNN.

Science

Grade 8 finished their quiz on physical changes. When they come back next year they will learn about the science behind cooking.  They will have a lesson on chemical changes for two weeks before going into a performance task.

Mathematics

This week the students finished their performance task on transformations.  When they come back they will look into triangles.

Week of December 5

English

Gr. 8 have finished their Task 2, and Task 3 has been discussed which is due on December 12/13 depending on their block. The poem can be as short as this:

Social Studies

MUN conference is well under way and will continue until the end of next week.  This is the rubric that will be used for their grade for the entire conference. Students are required to ask at least two questions and to stand in front twice to speak for or against a clause. When they speak for or against a clause, they will be asked questions.  The clauses have been emailed to them so that they can prepare ahead of time. They are not allowed to use their device during the conference, so everything will need to be printed or handwritten.

Science

Lab investigations have continued this week and the quiz on the investigations will be on December 12/13 depending on their block. Mathematics

Gr. 8 have learned how to use GeoGebra and have started working on their performance task, which is due on Dec. 13.

Week of November 28

English

Gr. 8 have been busy working on their Task 2, which is due second block  next week. They have been given scaffolds and plenty of examples in the google classroom such as this slides presentation, which basically writes the essay for them to help them complete the task. This is an example of the poetic analysis essay. Next week, they will work on Task 3, which is due the following week before the break.

Social Studies

Students have finished their MUN research and have come up with their policy statement and operative clauses.  Next week they will begin with their MUN conference. Students will deliver their policy statements in front of the class and they will lobby for their clauses. After that the debates will begin.  They will be graded using this rubric.  As the students work on their last Read and Respond, they need to be aware of how their wonder questions will be graded.  They can still work on their past wonder questions bearing in mind the rubric below:

Science

Lab investigations about transformations have begun and will continue next week.  Quiz about the investigations will be on Dec. 12 for Block D and Dec. 13 for the other blocks.

Mathematics

Gr. 8 have finished their end of unit test. The next two weeks before the break will be spent working on their performance task using drawing or GeoGebra app. Tutorials have been posted in the Google Classroom as well as the performance task.
