AFC letter assignment sheet was introduced in English and they are due on May 10/11. Students have continued their research this time with a focus on causes. Four note cards are due this Friday before 8 pm. Students have to make sure that the causes have solutions. Next week, they will work on the Tried Solutions, which are due on May 11 at 8 pm.
This week, Gr. 8 culminated their discussion on the Unit: Interdependence in Ecosystems. They had the final observation on the E-column and prepared for the assessment scheduled day 2 of this week. E-column journal is due this Friday. Here is the rubric for the journal. Students have to make sure that they have both quantitative and qualitative data in their journal. Day 3 was a transition activity in preparation for the science component of AFC which takes place after the long weekend. Students did the Who Dirtied the Water activity and talked about whose responsibility it is to clean the water. When they come back from the long weekend, they will design an experiment to clean up the water and the final challenge is to drink it.
Gr. 8 took the test on Functions. Next week will be about the performance task, Who Stole the Donut posted last week. The performance task is due end of class on May 7/8.
Students continued their research. Four causes note cards are due next Friday before 8 pm. English will still require a letter to a leader, but with a focus only on the global overview of the problem. Social Studies will now require an essay on the causes and tried solutions.
This week, students explored the question, “How is matter cycled within the ecosystem?”. They looked into the water and carbon cycles and applied their understanding of these cycles to the E-column. Next week is the assessment on the E-column on the second block. Journal is due third block and will be graded for communication. Knowledge and Understanding will be in a form of a quiz. The Transfer will be a question like “Create a model of how matter is cycled in your E-column.”
Students continued learning about functions and distance-time graphs. Next week is a continuation of the distance-time word problems then practice test and actual test on Functions and Equations. After that will be a performance task of their own “Who Stole the Donut”? Then the last unit is on statistics after which the students will work on AFC.
Students have finished their propaganda posters and paragraphs in English. Next week, Gr. 8 will continue their research about their AFC topics in both English and Social Studies. In Social Studies, they will talk about creating a research question. Thirteen global overview note cards are due next Friday, April 20 before 8 pm in Google Classroom. In English, students are expected to write a letter about the global overview and causes of their topic. In Social Studies, they will give an oral presentation on the tried solutions.
Gr. 8 have finished their assessment and have started to discuss how matter is cycled in an ecosystem and in their earth column. There will be an assessment on this on the week of April 23. Slope was the topic this week. Next week is about linear functions. There will be a test on April 26/27.
Students have started working on Propaganda, and the poster with printed paragraphs are due last block of next week. AFC will begin next week with the expectation that students will write a letter to an influential person or organization about their topic (with emphasis on global overview and causes).
Gr. 8 chose their topics for AFC and have been introduced to the note cards which are posted in the Google Classroom. Note cards are due on Fridays at 8 pm: Global Overview – April 20; Causes – April 27; and Tried Solutions – May 11. Next week, CRAAP test and paraphrasing will be reviewed as students continue their research.
Gr. 8 collected and organized data on the Pendulum lab investigation. Then, they wrote their explanations using the CER framework – write a Claim and write the Evidence with the scientific Reason behind the evidence. The assessment was moved to first block of next week due to lack of time. Then they will work on Cycling of Matter. The assessment will be about the following questions:
How does energy flow in an ecosystem?
How does energy flow in your E-column?
What happens to the amount of energy as it gets transferred from one form to another? (conserved)
What energy transformations take place when a pendulum swings?

Students took the quiz on expressions and equations and have started the lesson on slopes. Next week will be about functions and equations. Students should go on Khan Academy for the step by step lessons.
