Students learned about recognizing STEAL in indirect characterization and they had their first book club meeting. After the break, they will continue learning narrative techniques and they will start writing their memoirs. Also, they will have Book Club Meeting #2. Book Clubs this quarter will be graded.
Students have finished the UN document. They are expected to annotate (ask a question; define an unknown word; write a connection; selective highlighting) the 23 pages if they have not yet done so. Assessment on this will be on Day 3 immediately after the break. The full UN document is in Google Classroom. Gr.8 have also started discussing the MUN packet. They will have a mock MUN conference (Paris Peace Conference), which is not graded before the real debate. Their assigned countries for the real debate will be determined after the break. The topic (Nuclear Proliferation, LGBTQIA, or Capital Punishment) for the debate has been chosen by the class.
Gr. 8 assessed their own learning habits and came up with a generalization about physical changes. The phenomenon for chemical changes has been launched. After the break, chemical changes will continue to be explored.
Mr. Cargile’s class learned about converting repeated decimals to fractions. After the break, they will continue with approximating irrational numbers, then they will review for their first assessment. After the break, Ms. DeLuigi’s class will work on the infographic performance task and then will go into Geometry.
The memoir was the topic this week and students thought of memorable moments in their lives. One of those small moments written in their notebook will be turned into a memoir after the break. Students also checked out their book club book. For this unit, 54321 for the Book Club looks different:
Below is an example of how to do this in their English notebook:
Next week will be about using DADI (Dialogues, Actions, Descriptions, Introspection) to reveal STEAL (Speech, Thoughts, Effect on others, Actions, Looks) in order to show character change in their memoirs. Book Club meeting will also begin and students should be ready with their notes.
Gr. 8 continued annotating the UN packet and they will finish the 23-page document next week. They will also begin talking about the MUN debate to be continued after the break.
Students had the much-awaited ice cream using liquid nitrogen and learned the science behind it. They also took the second part of the assessment on physical changes.
Next week is about Chemical Change.
Ms. DeLuigi’s class finished their assessment and next week is about the performance task. Mr. Cargile’s class learned about one step equations leading up to irrational numbers. Next week is on estimating irrational numbers.
Students finished and celebrated their essays. Next week is about narrative writing as they read and eventually write their own memoirs after the break. They will also get their Book Club book by the end of next week and start reading.
This week, students discussed WWII and they have started reading the United Nations packet posted in Google Classroom. They had to annotate the packet up to page 13 this week:
Define an unknown word
Ask a question
Make a connection
Gr. 8 has a video assessment due next week, October 18 at 8 pm. They have to record a minimum of 5 minutes video of themselves acting as a professor comparing and contrasting WWI and WWII using the acronym MAIN. The assignment, rubric, and sample video is in Google Classroom. Below is the rubric:
Students investigated freezing using dry ice, water, and salt water. Next week on Day 3, they will have an assessment on the physical changes. They are expected to know about the physical changes stations and they have to create and analyze a graph based on a given data using Google Sheets. Review slides will be posted this weekend. They will also make ice cream.
Ms. DeLuigi’s class worked on scientific notation. Next week is a unit test on the number system and equations. Here is a practice test. Mr. Cargile continued to work on the big four skills. Next week, they will go into one step equations and decimal to fractions (irrational). Students are expected to work on Khan Academy as posted in their Google Classroom.
Gr. 8 started writing their essays, and they will continue writing next week for two more sessions. They will then celebrate their writing. The next unit will be on narrative techniques as they read memoirs and write their own.
Students discussed the repercussions of WWI and did their assessment on the morality of WWI. Next week will be about the United Nations and MUN.
Gr. 8 finished their assessment on the physical changes stations. They have started their investigation on melting. Next week will be about freezing and hopefully, ice cream!
Mr. Cargile’s class will discuss one-step equations and decimal to fraction next week. Ms. DeLuigi’s class will continue exponents and will work on the performance task on infographic.
